Are You A Big Loser ?

Hopefully you are. If not what are you doing wrong ? Well like it said in my bio I ran gyms for over 12 years and have also sold home gym equipment at busybody for a few years, so I have seen my share of losers and non losers. Here are a few of the reasons I have observed for not having success :

1. Cardio - We have all been brought up with the concept that more is better. Not so when you are trying to lose body fat. While doing your cardio work out you will need to stay within your heart rate fat burning zone ( 220 - your age x 65% ). I see people that are trying to lose weight working their little hearts out and going as fast as they can for as long as they can. The problem is that they are burning muscle faster than they are burning fat. The reason is that when your body needs fuel that fast it will burn muscle before it will burn fat which is hard to do. When you burn muscle you are also lowering your metabolism which make it even harder for you to lose weight. Which brings up #2 reason.

2. Strength Training - There are 2 mistakes that people make when doing a strength work out to lose weight. When I asked people what their goals were when I was enrolling new member I would hear from mostly men that they wanted to build their Chest, Back, Arms and lose fat in their mid section. Yes these are great goals but you cannot do a weight gain and weight lost program at the same time. Some guys do the weight gain program first and have 6 pack abs that you cannot see under the 20 Lbs of fat they still have. Ladies ask for hip and thigh exercises to lose inches in these areas. Well the truth here is makes no difference what muscles you are working your body will burn fat in the reverse order you out it on. So the last place you put on the inches is the first place you are going to take it off.

3. If you are a 250 Lb person you would need to take in 2500 calories ( Add a 0 to 250 ) a day to maintain your 250 Lbs. If you take in more then 2500 calories you are going to gain weight, take in less and you are going to lose weight. I think that everybody knows this so what people like to do is drop from 2500 calories a day down to 1200. Yes this does work but 999 people out of 1000 can't stick to this diet for very long and certainly not a life time. This is how it is done

One of the first things I learned from Jack that losing weight is a 3 part program.

1. Proper Diet

2. Cardio Training

3. Strength Training

Diet -- As I said it is very hard to stick to a diet lower your intake 1000 calories per day but 500 is not that much. Very easy if you stay away from donuts, pie, Etc.

Cardio Training -- You can burn as much as 200 to 300 calories in a 45 minute work out

Strength Training -- You can increase your metabolism by gaining muscle on your body. The rule of thumb is for every pound of muscle you gain you will burn an extra 50 calories per day. This means that if you add 5 pounds of muscle on your body you will be burning 250 more calories a day. Even when you are sitting watching TV you are burning up more calories. Muscle weights more than fat, so as you lose fat and gain muscle your weight may not change but your pants or
dress size will.

Lets put it together. How do you lower your calorie intake from 2500 to 1500 a day

2500 Calories
- 500 Less Calories Taken in
- 250 Burned up in Cardio Work Out
- 250 Extra Calories burned up by increasing metabolism due to gaining 5 Lbs of Muscle
___________
1500 Calories Per Day

Remember this is something that you have to do and need to do for the rest of your life. You need to tell yourself that you are ready to do this . If you go out to sears and purchase a $399 treadmill and a $299 gym you are starting out all wrong and you will never become a loser. Get yourself good solid equipment, something that will last and work well for you. Also you have made a commitment by spenting the money.

What has your gym done for you lately ?

Gyms these days are full of top brand equipment like Life Fitness, Bodymaster, Hammer, Cybex, Precor, Stairmaster etc. The equipment is much more advanced than it was just 10 years ago.

Well, I say what good is it if you don't know how to use it.

You see these TV ads that show an overweight person losing 20 to 30 Lbs in a few months and all you have to do is join and like magic you will lose the weight, reshape your body, meet the person of your dreams, and live happily ever after.

Well it is true you need to join a gym, but after you join 99.9% of us need help. What is a chest press or a low row machine ? How much weight do I use and how many times do I do it ? There is no one to ask unless you want to pay a personal trainer $50.00 an hour to show you. I can safely say that over 70% of members that join a gym are using the equipment improperly. Half of these members will drop out because they are not seeing the results they saw on TV. You would think that there would be a law, as part of the membership the gym would have to provide a least one instructor on the exercise floor at all times showing members how to use the equipment properly. At the price of memberships these days they can afford it. The reason they don't is that it would take away from their personal training business.

Way back in the late 60's Jack La Lanne and Vic Tanney started the first commercial gyms. The concept was to have people enroll into their gym and they would provide the equipment and show you how to use it.

I managed Jack La Lanne gyms for 12 years and the concept stayed the same. When we had a new person enroll they were assigned an instructor . On the new members first day we would record their body measurements and weight and set up realistic goals for the first 3 months.

We then set up a work out card for the member and took them through their first work out. The instructor would first demonstrate how to do the exercise properly than have the member do it. On each visit the member would come in pull his card from the A to Z file and hand it to their instructor. The instructor would sign the card and take the new member through the work out again.

This would go on till the instructor felt confident that the member was ready to go on their own. At that time the member still had to have their instructor sign them in each visit, and the instructor would now take the member though again on every 5Th visit to make an adjustment to the program. This normally went on for 3 months.

By this time the member has hit their first set of goals and is fully versed on how to use the equipment properly. A lot of our members were hired as instructors because of the training they received as members.

Back when I was running clubs we didn't have fancy TV commercials or newspaper ads to draw people in. Word of mouth was our way of advertising. A friend of one of our members would notice how good the member was looking and ask, " What have you been doing, you look great" the member would reply, "I have been exercising at Jack La Lannes" and bring that person in as a guest.

Well that was then and this is now. Being here in California and having Arnold Schwarzenegger as our governor, you would think that it would be a little different here today.

Most strength equipment these days has a placard on the machine to show you what muscle group the equipment is for and a picture on how to use it. It doesn't replace a instructor but it helps. Look for it the next time you work out

It's to Hot to WorkOut Today

Summer heat is here and it slows all of us down. It would be really easy to say, " I don't think that I am going to the gym today." I said that yesterday, I was just wiped out from the heat. The temperature here in Corona has been up in the 110 degree mark and very humid. It would be very easy to just take the summer off but I have been doing so well making it to the gym on a pretty steady basis I don't want to get out of my routine. So this is what I decided to do :

1. I am going to still try and get there as much as possible but not feel guilty if I take a day off when I don't feel like going. After all, its summer and Corona is not far from the ocean and it is nice and cool there. If you have a vacation planned definitely go and enjoy yourself.

2. I am going to cut my work outs down to about half of what I normally do. If I know that it is going to be a light work out today I will probably get there .

3. I might only do cardio one day and strength the next.

The idea is to just get there. It is only for a few weeks while it is so hot and humid. Remember to drink a lot of water and to not over do it. Be sure to do your exercising indoors with A/C if possible. A little trick to get cool is to wet your towel in the water fountain, wring it out and place it around your neck. It helps cool you down.

Work-Out Partners Good or Bad Idea ?

Having a workout partner can be a good thing but it could also be a bad thing if you are not careful. Here is why:

Keeping in mind that this site is for beginners, a lot of beginners like to have a friend along with them to start a program or to join a gym. This is a good thing. The problems start when one of the partners can't make it that day or wants to quit all together. 98% of the time the partner will not go in that day either, or if your partner quits he or she will too.

What made me decide to write this review is I have 2 ladies in my gym that I see come in about 1 or 2 times a week. I think that they are sisters because they look so much alike. I have not ever seen one of them there without the other. Which means that there is a phone call at some point where one of them ask the other " Are you going to the gym today." If there is a yes they both are there, if it is no neither are there. This is not good.

Having a partner can turn your work-out into a social event not a work-out. It is very easy to get engrossed in a good story that one of the partners have to tell about some event in there lives. Before you know it you spent most of your hour talking and not working out. I am planning on writing a review soon on the importance of concentration and proper attitude during a work out. I will put a link here to it when I do.

If you do decide to get a work-out partner, be sure that you are properly matched. If you partner up with a person that can only do half as much as you, that is not very motivating for you. If you are working out with free weights with this person, you will be wasting a lot of time taking plates on and off. Speaking of time never work-out with more then 3 people. The time between sets would take to long. I worked out with 5 guys once and it took 3 hours to go through my program.

Well after all that said, having a work-out partner can be a good thing. If you can fine someone that is properly matched not only in strength but motivationally as well, I would say go for it. Having a partner can really help your program by having that person encourage you as you are doing your set. Also having a spotter to help you to do 2 or 3 extra reps. each set is very important to help to gain strength and increase your workout.

For myself, over the years I have had workout partners and I don't think that I will ever again. It is nice to have someone there for a spot and motivation, but is seems like it takes 4 times as long to complete my workout. When I go on my own I get there when I want to, Work the body parts that I want to, and when I need a spotter I just ask someone for help. If you go to a smaller gym and go about the same time each time, you will quickly get to know the regular crowd so you won't feel like you are alone.

Well that's all I have to say about work-out partners. If you can find the right person they are great.

Do you have a Workout from Hell ?????

If you have been working out for less than a year, and you think that you have A Workout From Hell, what are you doing ? 99 people out of 100 drop out of their fitness program because they are doing to much. Jack La Lanne once told me , " I would rather see a person do to little exercise for the rest of their life, rather than do to much for 6 months and then drop out forever. "

When I first started working at Jack La Lanne's Gym, we were not allowed to lift any weights over 50 Lbs. by ourselves. Throughout the day I would demonstrate exercises to members using no more than 50 Lbs and only doing 3 to 4 reps. I am not going to tell you I got in the best shape in my life, but I did notice more muscle tone and loss of body fat.

If you think that you have A Workout from Hell and you have been working out less then 1 year, I would suggest cutting your workout in half. Yes Half, I know I have been through it and have seen it happen many times. Yes you are going to get buffed faster but 2 years down the road you won't be because you dropped out.

Now I know that everyone is different and some people progress faster than others, but unless you are a dedicated professional bodybuilder you do not need a Workout from Hell

Last Note : Workout Smarter not Harder. I watch people using so much weight on the machines that they cannot preform the exercise properly. I watch a guy walking on the treadmill every morning at my gym at full incline and holding on to the display board to hold himself from falling off. I know he is thinking more is better. Unlike other things in life, in an exercise program most times less is better especially if you are trying to burn body fat.

Is It Time Yet ????

Is it time to increase my workout ? How do you know when you are ready to go up a notch? If you are using a treadmill, bike, or elliptical here is one method that I have been using for myself.

Most of your better cardio equipment comes with a program called Heart Rate Control or HRC .. Prior to starting your program the Treadmill, Elliptical, Bike, etc. will ask you your age and the type of workout you want ( Cardio or Fat Burning ). If you are a beginner you would want to choose Fat burning.

The machine will calculate a target rate for you base on this information. Lets just say that your target heart rate is 135 beats per min. This means if you heart rate is below 135 the machine will increase the intensity by changing the speed, elevation, or resistance until your heart rate is up to 135. Just the opposite if your heart rate is to high it will decrease the intensity until you get back down to 135 beats per minute. Its like having a personal trainer standing next to you. As time goes on your program intensity will increase automatically without you even thinking about it. This method requires wearing a telemetry belt or holding on to heart rate sensors located on the bars for your entire workout. Not for me ..

I like the HRC idea but I want to have more control. This is how to do it. First you will need to find what your maximum heart rate should be ( 220 minus you age ) I am 59 so my Max HR is 161. If you are a beginner you should stay at 65% to 75% of this number which for me is around 125 beats per minute. Try to purchase or use a machine that has contact heart rate ( Hand Sensors ) . Go ahead select manual program and begin. After your warm up put your hands on the sensors and check your heart rate about every one to two minutes. If you are to low increase or if you are to high decrease your work load. Before you know it your program has increased without you even thinking about it.

I like comparing calories burned . As long as you going the same time each day ,say 20 mins. you will see that the calories burned each day will start to go up.

The Kirk Sandoval Story

I will never forget one night at the Fullerton Jack La Lanne's gym. The gym was in the basement of a mall and my desk was at the bottom of the steps. I could always hear the front door open but because of the low ceiling I wasn't able see who was coming down till they were about half way down the stairs. It was late into the night when I heard the front door opened and I looked up to see who was coming down the stairs.

Normally I would see whoever it was in just a few seconds but at least 45 seconds went by and still there wasn't anybody coming down the stairs. Finally I saw a mans foot then another coming down very slowly. After about 2 minutes he was at the bottom of the stairs.

He walked over to me looking down at the floor the whole time. " My name is Kirk Sandoval" the man said very slowly and never looking up. " I would like to join your club " he mumbled. Well what happen was kirk went out for a short walk and couldn't make it back . He had to be picked up by an ambulance and taken back home. His doctor told him that if he didn't start to do some type of exercise he would die soon.

I got him signed up and introducted him to my top instructor. Kirk made it in at least 3 times a week and started to lose weight within two or three weeks. First it was just a few pounds but then it seemed to be melting off him. Before you knew it Kirk was almost flying down the stairs. He wasn't looking down anymore while he was talking, his whole personally had changed. He even met a nice girl and got married.

Well I got transfered to another club and Jack's is not there anymore, but I am sure that Kirk is still doing some type of a exercise program. I often think of Kirk he was a real inspiration.

Unleash the Power of Fiber

For most people reckless snacking derails their healthy diet, leaving them frustrated and overweight.

Do you eat a healthy lunch only to succumb to the vending machine an hour later?

I've got good news for you, if you do.

With just a few adjustments to your diet, you can effortlessly kick your snacking habit to the curb.

You see, the urge to snack happens when your blood sugar levels drop—giving your body the message that you need more fuel. (Enter the vending machine.) This happens after eating meals that are low in fiber, low in calories, and high in sugar.

The solution?

Eat meals that are filled with fiber and you'll stabilize your blood sugar levels, and feel full longer.

The Case for High Fiber

Researchers have done their homework on fiber, and the results spell easy weight loss for all who listen. By consuming an extra 14 grams of fiber each day you can cut your calorie intake by a full 10 percent.

People who consume more fiber (as low as 20 grams per day) weigh an average of 8 pounds lighter than people who consume low fiber (closer to 10 grams per day).

There are two main reasons that high fiber leads to weight loss:
Fiber fills you up and stabilizes blood sugar for hours. This tames your appetite and protects you from needless snacking.
Foods that are high in fiber aren't as calorie dense. When you fill up on high fiber foods you eat just as much but take in fewer calories.
Breaking it Down

It's always easier to understand a concept like this when real life examples are given. So here's a review of a low fiber, high sugar diet that ‘Jane' was eating, and then we'll see the small changes made to increase her fiber content and stabilize blood sugar.

Breakfast: Jane would typically eat a packet of instant oatmeal made with low fat milk and topped with banana and brown sugar. On the way to work she would also grab a mocha or latte.

Snack: Without fail by 10am Jane's stomach would growl, sending her to the vending machine. She would end up with a small bag of chips, crackers or candy to hold her over until lunch.

Lunch: By noon Jane was starving again, and would inhale her packed lunch of a medium sized bagel with low fat cream cheese and deli slices, and a small container of yogurt.

Snack: At 3pm Jane's appetite would soar and she would scavenge the office for a small snack to hold her over until dinner. She usually found part of a leftover pastry or cookies, and if all else failed she would once again turn to the vending machine.

Dinner: Most nights Jane would make a dinner of chicken breast, instant rice and a small salad, some nights she would substitute pasta for the rice.

Snack: Every night at 10pm Jane would find herself back in the kitchen in search of something sweet. Most often she would have a bowl of low fat ice cream or sorbet before going to bed.

Did you notice a trend in Jane's diet? While she kept her selections fairly low in fat, she hardly ate any fiber which left her battling hunger all day. Her meals were also very high in sugar, which caused her blood sugar levels to jump up and plunge down throughout the day.

Here's the revised version of Jane's meals:

Breakfast: Instead of the instant oatmeal Jane switched to using old fashion (intact) oats. She then topped it with broken walnut pieces and banana. Instead of drinking a high-sugar mocha or latte, she started drinking hot tea.

Snack: Much to her surprise, 10am came and went without so much as a hunger pain. Jane kept her focus and worked through till lunch.

Lunch: For lunch Jane had a cup of lentil soup, a slice of rye bread and a cup of steamed veggies.

Snack: 3pm came and went, and again Jane didn't feel the need snack. On her way home she ate a small handful of almonds.

Dinner: This meal didn't change much for Jane. Instead of instant rice she made brown or wild rice, and instead of white pasta she made whole wheat. She also added a vegetable dish to dinner, in addition to the salad.

Snack: Most nights Jane skips her late night snack since she just doesn't feel hungry. On those nights that she does want a sweet treat she enjoys sliced fruit.

That didn't look hard, did it?

As you probably noticed, Jane's daily calories dropped dramatically after adding fiber to each meal. Also her percentage of calories from fat also dropped, since her snack foods were high in fat.

This means that Jane is effortlessly losing weight simply by consuming more fiber.

You can follow Jane's lead by evolving your diet to include higher levels of fiber.

How much fiber do you eat each day? Grab a pen and paper and tally it up: Beans, one half cup (7); Vegetables, one cup (4); Salad, one cup (2); Fruit, one piece (3); Fruit juice, one cup (1); White bread (1); Whole grain bread (2); White rice, one cup (1); Brown rice, one cup (3); Intact Oatmeal, one cup (4); Meat, poultry or fish (0); Eggs or dairy (0); Sodas or water (0).

If you scored less than 20: You need more fiber in your diet. Boosting your fiber will control your appetite and cut your risk for many other health problems.

If you scored 20-39: You consume more fiber than most people, but adding more fiber to your diet will continue to make foods more satisfying and cut your calorie intake.

If you scored 40 or more: Congratulations, you are getting plenty of healthy fiber in your diet. An added bonus for you is a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and digestive problems.
Sweet Braised Figs
This recipe is simple, healthy and delicious. Braised figs make a stunning display, and their delicate warm taste will not disappoint. Add braised figs to your oatmeal, on fat-free cottage cheese or even throw a few onto a salad. Not only are figs high in fiber, they are also loaded with potassium - a mineral important in controlling blood pressure.

Yield: 6 servings

Here's what you need...

Non-stick cooking spray
1 Tablespoon agave nectar
12 figs, sliced in half
Heat a large non-stick saute pan and spray with cooking spray. Add the agave nectar.
Place the figs, sliced side down in the pan. Cook for 3-5 minutes over medium heat. The figs will become slightly sticky and golden around the edges.
Remove from pan and place sliced side up on a plate. Drizzle with remaining juice from the pan.
Nutritional Analysis: One serving equals: 70 calories, .2g fat, 18g carbohydrate, 2.4g fiber, and .6g protein.

3 Steps to Overcome Overeating

Let's face it, the extra pounds you're carrying around are due to overeating - plain and simple.

Why do you overeat? Here are a few likely reasons:

Habit: Whether you realize it or not, you eat in a learned pattern, rather than out of need. You clean your plate because that's what your mother taught. You eat what is served without stopping to check if you are full. You butter two pieces of toast for breakfast rather than questioning if one piece would do the job.
Absentminded: You forget to pay attention when you eat. Mindless munching while watching a movie, snacking while driving, or picking at food while cooking - these absentminded calories really add up.
Something Deeper: Sometimes you use food for recreation or to change your mood. These calories may lend you a temporary sense of comfort or pleasure, but ultimately your body suffers from the indulgence. Here are 3 Steps To Overcome Overeating - read these, and apply them to your life.

Step #1: Pay Attention

Be aware of what and how much you eat. This simple concept will save you from hundreds upon hundreds of calories each week.

To apply this rule, don't eat while your attention is distracted by another activity. Only put food in your mouth when you are hungry and conscious of it. This means turn off the T.V., get out of your car, and no matter what you do, don't graze in the kitchen while cooking.

Step #2: Practice Balance

Be aware of the types of food that you eat during each meal, and make sure that it's balanced. When you eat a balanced diet filled with lean protein, whole grains, lots of veggies, a few daily servings of fruit and limited fat and sweets, your body will be satisfied and you'll lose the urge to overeat.

This means you shouldn't always eat carb-based meals, and you also shouldn't always eat high-fat meals. Make a mental checklist of the food groups that you've eaten each day. Did you eat lean protein? Did you have plenty of vegetables? Did you refrain from eating more than one or two primarily carb-based meals? This mental checklist will save you from making food decisions that you'd later regret.

Step #3: Be Tuned In

Your body will always tell you when its hunger has been satisfied - you've just gotten so good at ignoring the signs that you barrel through your meal only to feel like you've been hit by a ton of bricks once all that food hits your stomach. It's time to take a deep breath and listen to your body.

An important part of being tuned in is to eat slowly. Once you start to pay attention you'll notice a point when each bite becomes less and less satisfying. That is your body's way of letting you know that you've had enough and that each continued bite is simply overkill (yes, even if you're only halfway through that plate of pasta).

By learning how to control your eating habits, you'll find weight loss to come simply and naturally.

…I guess that’s my curse, and probably the curse of all top personal trainers. How do I answer such a loaded question, especially when the person across from me is waiting for me to tell them to take the magic pill that will burn fat while they sleep.
That magic pill doesn’t exist, and if it did I have no doubt that it would cause so many undesired side-effects that it would be quickly pulled off the shelves – but not before doing significant damage.

Well, in the past I would go into a long (and detailed) process of educating the person in front of me. Educating them on the truth about permanent weight loss. In fact, sometimes I would probably give them more information than they could handle at one time.

Your Game Plan

There are four aspects to achieving and maintaining a healthy, fit body.

These are: Nutrition (What you eat, when you eat it, and how much you eat of it), Cardiovascular Training (Working out your heart – and burning calories by moving your body ex: walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics…things that make you sweat), Resistance Training (Including Weight training with free weights, Weight machines, resistance bands, exercise balls, and even your own body weight – anything that gives your muscles resistance to work against),

And finally…ACCOUTABILITY and MOTIVATION. The number one reason most people fail in achieving their weight loss and fitness goals is because they fail to make it a lifestyle. This is where accountability and motivation are most useful.

Whether you try it yourself, or work with a professional fitness trainer, you must apply the most up to date nutrition, cardiovascular training and resistance training information available to you. Further, if you work with a fitness trainer you can be 100% confident that your weight loss and fitness program is specifically created to give you maximum results in minimum time.

Getting The Edge

To ensure that you get quick and permanent results I suggest that you hire a fitness trainer who can not only educate you, but who can also provide fuel in the form of motivation and success in the form of accountability.

These four components are what make a person lean, toned, fit and strong – for a lifetime. The following three tips are going to dive into each topic in depth and give you all the “gems” you need to effectively reach your fitness goals.

Tip 1. NUTRITION

Nutrition? I thought we were talking about being fit and toned! Nutrition is a huge part of you health and appearance. Some professionals will attest that as much as 80% of your weight loss and fitness results are based on what you eat. This means that you could workout all day long, but if you are eating junk, your body will show it.

The word alone can make people cringe – as the guiltily think of the drive thru lunch that they just ate. Nutrition is a subject that people spend their careers studying and takes volumes of books to explain. My objective is to teach you how to eat a healthy diet that encourages your body to burn fat rather than store it. You don’t need overwhelming science to “get” this.

A healthy diet needs to be well rounded with the proper amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The RDA’s recommendation for daily intake of such things is a good place to check your optimal intakes.

The first thing that you need to know about nutrition is this fact: Eating small meals every 3 hours will increase your metabolism and reduce fat storage. This is a proven fact that bodybuilders, models, athletes and lean people in general abide by – and so should you.

Eating right when you wake up is vital to breaking the fast your body enters every night. About 3-4 hours after you eat your body shuts down your metabolism and acts as if it needs to store food. This is a great function to have if a famine breaks out and you don’t see food for weeks. After all, if there’s famine you’re going to want your body to work “efficiently” by storing fat, and using it slowly.

However, you don’t want your body to store fat and burn it slowly now, right? Since there is no food shortage or famine at the moment (and there likely wont be one any time soon) then it is pretty annoying when your body starts packing on the pounds. So, in order to communicate with your body that it is healthy, well fed, and not in need of extra fat storage you need to reprogram your metabolism. Here’s how to go about it. Start your day off with a small meal and continue to eat small meals every 3 hours or so.

What should you eat? Here I am just going to give you general guidelines – since we would have to sit down together to create an exact fat burning meal plan for your body. These suggestions are a basic guideline to healthy meals that do not promote fat storage.

Protein: 20%

Fat: 15%

Carbs: 65%

Each meal that you consume needs to have calories coming from protein, carbohydrates and fat. Your body needs each of these in small amounts throughout the day – when you take in a meal that is 90% carbohydrate 5% fat and 5% protein your body is going to digest it faster (i.e. get hungry again faster) even if the calorie count is the same as a meal with above percentages, and you are more likely to store a percentage of the carbs as fat.

Hold your horses…

Don’t go and cut all the carbs out of your meals just yet. We all saw what the low carb craze did for the country. People actually got fatter! Cutting carbs could cause a whole new “house of cards” effect and your body will once again go into fat storage mode. Believe me, you don’t want that.

Tip 2. CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING

What is Cardiovascular Training?

Cardiovascular training is anything that gets your heart pumping at an elevated speed. This includes walking, jogging, bike riding, swimming, playing sports, roller skating … you get the idea! Cardiovascular training is used to burn calories and to improve one’s overall conditioning.

Why should I train my cardiovascular system?

Walking, jogging, biking … they all seems to take so much effort! Why should I make myself do these when I don’t enjoy them? While cardiovascular training may seem like a chore, you will be more than willing to hop on a treadmill after reading the following benefits to cardiovascular training!

Weight Loss

Probably the most cherished side effect of cardiovascular training is losing those unwanted pounds! Since your body’s decision to store fat is based on the equation of Energy In vs. Energy Out, the more Energy Out that you have the less energy you will have to store on your waist, hips and thighs.

Conditioning

When was the last time you got winded walking up a flight of stairs? Not the greatest feeling was it? When you are wheezing and clutching your side ache, you know without a shadow of a doubt that you are out of shape!

When you train your cardiovascular system you will begin to find that you don’t lose your breathe as easily under strenuous activity. Your heart becomes conditioned to pump faster on demand without sending you into a wheezing fit. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body, and if you want to enjoy the new body you are about to create, then wouldn’t you want to have a healthy heart along with it? I know of two heart surgeons who would agree with me.

Disease Prevention

Heart attack, stroke, hypertension, and diabetes are just a few of the diseases that you would be defending yourself against with cardiovascular training. By losing excess weight and conditioning your body, you arm your body against these and many other ailments.

Tip 3. RESISTANCE TRAINING

What is Resistance Training? Resistance training is anything that gives resistance against your muscles. The most traditional resistance training is dumbbells or barbells, but it can take on many other forms as well. Cable machines and pulley systems give great resistance, as do elastic bands. Using your own body weight is another way to give your muscles resistance.

Today you have many options when it comes to resistance training – but they all have one thing in common…it will change your life!

Why should I lift weights?Weight lifting … isn’t that kind of a macho guy thing any more? I mean, last I checked my most successful clients haven’t been registered for any upcoming body building shows.

“But I don’t want to look muscular and bulky.” I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten this reaction from women when I encourage them to lift weights! The critical thing here is that in order to be fit and toned you MUST lift weights! No, don’t give me that horrified look! Resistance training can literally change your entire body, let alone your self-confidence and self-esteem, but most importantly, resistance training could possibly be the best thing that you will ever do to keep your body looking and feeling 10 years younger.

MetabolismResistance training is the one thing that we do that elevates our metabolism for hours after a workout. Cardiovascular workouts are effective and necessary, but, after an hour of running, your metabolism is only elevated for less than an hour before going back down to normal.

On the other hand, resistance training will literally raise your metabolism permanently. This happens because weight lifting is actually a process of breaking down muscle tissue and re-building it back stronger, firmer and more tone.

This process takes time and energy AKA calories. Once you have added muscle tone to a given area on your body it now takes even more energy to maintain this muscle.

So here is the run down on why resistance training is such a metabolism booster:

When you weight train you break down muscle fibers, which takes energy to rebuild, when these muscle fibers have been rebuilt they are tighter, toner, more firm and now take more energy to maintain. Hence: a higher metabolism all day long. Simple, yet so effective!

1 lb of muscle burns about 50 calories a day

1lb of fat burns 4 calories a day

Toned and Sculpted

Resistance training is responsible for the beautiful sculpted and toned look that many athletes sport. As mentioned in the metabolism section, resistance training breaks down muscle fibers so that they can rebuild stronger. These strengthened fibers are denser than the weaker ones that they are replacing, thus resulting in a firmer, tighter feel.

Since we know that muscles consume more energy than fat, it is safe to assume that when you increase in muscle you will also decrease in fat. (This is of course assuming that your caloric intake does not increase and that your cardiovascular activities do not decrease.) Due to this decrease in fat, the shape of your muscles will start to be unveiled by the shedding of the extra fat tissue that covers them. Now that’s body sculpting!

If your muscles were stronger than your ligaments / tendons then they would snap right off of your bones.
